Cloud Computing Basics

UNIT I CLOUD COMPUTING BASICS

1.1  Cloud computing overview:

Cloud Computing  allows us to access the applications  over the Internet. It allows us to create, configure, and customize the applications online.

Cloud:

The term Cloud refers to a Network or Internet. In other words, we can say that Cloud is something, which is present at a remote location. Cloud can provide services over public and private networks, i.e., LAN, WAN or VPN.

Applications such as e-mail, web conferencing, customer relationship management (CRM) execute on cloud.

Cloud Computing:

Cloud Computing refers to manipulating, configuring, and accessing the hardware and software resources remotely. It offers online data storage, infrastructure, and application.

Cloud computing offers platform independency, as the software is not required to be installed locally on the PC.

Origins of Cloud computing:

The idea of an “Computer Network” was introduced in the 1960s by JCR Licklider, who was the father of the Internet. He is responsible for  the creation  of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in 1969.His vision was “everyone on the globe to be interconnected. They should be able to access programs and data at any site, from anywhere”. Later ARPANET is  known as “Internet”.

Cloud Computing has evolved from various computing technologies like grid computing, utility computing and virtualization. The most recent development of cloud computing has evolved from the Web2.0 technology. Web 2.0 allows users  to collaborate and share information online via social media, blogging and Web-based communities.  Examples of Web 2.0 include Facebook,YouTube, etc.

In 1999, Salesforce.com started delivering of applications to users using a simple website.

In 2002, Amazon started AWS(Amazon Web Services), providing services like Storage, Networking, and even Artificial  Intelligence.

In 2009, Google Apps also started to provide cloud computing enterprise applications.

In 2009, Microsoft launched Windows Azure, and companies like Oracle and HP have started to provide cloud services. Now, cloud computing has become mainstream in IT industry.
